Raised on a sheep farm in Vermont, Ethan’s drawings, paintings, murals, sculptures and publications are rooted in landscape and the awkward, dangerous and absurd ways in which humans occupy it. Often working site specifically in collaboration with organizations, institutions and communities, Ethan’s murals have tackled issues such as food insecurity, labor and climate change.
Recent major commissions include the Louis Roederer Foundation of France, Expedia, Facebook and D+S Editions France. Solo museum exhibitions include the Cahoon Museum of American Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, The Currier Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville and the Clay Center in West Virginia. Ethan is represented by Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire in Paris, Obsolete Gallery in Culver City, CA and Winston Wächter Fine Art in New York City and Seattle. His work is in many public, private and corporate collections and has been reviewed and published widely around the world.
Ethan’s awards and accolades include the Stein Prize by MOCA Jacksonville, fellowships and grants at the Ballinglen Foundation in Ireland, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Berkshire Taconic Foundation, a Massachusetts Book Award Honor, a junior Library Guild Medal, a monograph on his work with German publisher Hatje Cantz and an official selection as part of the New York Film Festival. Ethan and his creative partner and spouse, Vita Weinstein Murrow make mostly wordless picture books, which are available through Candlewick and Templar presses worldwide.
